Oral Cancer

Oral cancer is the sixth most form of common cancer in the world with a 5-year survival rate of less than 50%.  The most common causes of oral cancer are tobacco and alcohol, factors that can be controlled.  The presentation of oral cancer is typically as an ulcer, red patch or white lesion.  It is important for the dental health care provider to inspect the mouth for suspicious lesions and take a biopsy to establish the diagnosis.  Since smaller oral cancers have a better prognosis than larger ones, early detection plays an important role in reducing both the treatment associated morbidity and death rate from the disease.  This featured course will cover the important general features of oral cancer, its causes, the clinical presentation and how the disease is managed.

Stage of Curriculum

When using Continuing Education materials as student course work, select the appropriate stage, including:

  • Pre-matriculation:  This stage is after a student has been admitted, but before school starts.  These courses present foundation information and will help with vocabulary and basic concepts.
  • Pre-clinical:  This stage is before a student begins to see patients.  These courses review the basic concepts for patient care.
  • Pre-clinical Advanced:  This stage is after the first two terms of clinical experience and before more complicated cases are treated.

Disclaimer:  Participants must always be aware of the hazards of using limited knowledge in integrating new techniques or procedures into their practice.  Only sound evidence-based dentistry should be used in patient therapy.
