Refresher Training

Since medical emergencies in the dental office are a rare occurrence, it is easy for staff members to forget the sequence because of the lack of practice. Although recertification is required usually at two-year intervals, periodic in-office drills are recommended. Some suggestions are:

• Mock Codes – Medical emergency scenarios are presented to staff members. Mannequins or large life-like dolls can make the exercise more realistic. Staff members can identify and practice duties of different members and responsibilities for various emergency situations.

• Scavenger Hunt – A staff member is given a list of items needed for a particular emergency and is required to obtain and prepare them for administration and use within a given amount of time.
