Only a small number of drugs in clinical use have been positively implicated in teratogenesis. Of note for oral healthcare providers are the tetracyclines. They induce enamel hypoplasia, discoloration of teeth, and diminished growth of long bones.21,22 Furthermore, they produce higher rates of neuronal-tube defect, cleft palate, and multiple congenital abnormalities such as neuronal-tube defect with cardiovascular malformation.23
Recent evidence suggests that acetaminophen (APAP) may interfere with neurodevelopment and children prenatally exposed to acetaminophen were more likely to develop autism spectrum and attention‑deficit and hyperactivity symptoms24,25 While the risk appears to be dose related, practitioners should only prescribe APAP to the pregnant patient only when necessary.24
