In addition to oral effects, cannabis smoking has been implicated in cardiovascular disease. A systematic review reports atrial fibrillation, increased heart rate, and a risk for postural hypotension in healthy men who used marijuana.32 Cardiovascular changes can lead to angina attacks, tacychardia, and acute hypertension. These issues are especially concerning when using local anesthetic. Additionally, the use of cannabis can lead to breathing problems, issues with child development, and intense nausea and vomiting (Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome).24,30,47
Oral health professionals should learn the signs and symptoms of active marijuana intoxication including paranoia, anxiety, tachycardia, hallucinations, hyperactivity, and euphoric highs.
