Detecting and reporting suspected cases of abuse is not intended to punish the caregivers; rather, it is necessary to provide for the safety and health of children. To provide that important safety net, dentists must be trained to identify abuse and neglect, collect and document sufficient facts to make a mandatory report, and treat child victims.
