Assessment of the Form of Adjacent Teeth
It is important to match the shape of the implant restoration with the shape of the adjacent teeth, as it affects its appearance and final esthetic outcome.13 The dental crown morphology may be classified as square or triangular (Figures 4 & 5).20 In teeth with a square-shaped crown morphology, the “black triangle” open embrasure created due to the loss of papilla is relatively inconspicuous.20,21 This is associated with broad interproximal contact areas that are located close to the cervical aspect of the tooth crown.21 However, in teeth with a triangular-shaped crown morphology, the black triangle embrasure space created due to the loss of papilla is distinctly visible.21 This is associated with narrow interproximal contact areas that are located close to the incisal aspect of the tooth crown.21 Teeth with a triangular crown morphology are also associated with a thin peri-implant mucosal phenotype.21
