Provide Immediate Care to the Exposure Site
Following an exposure, the injured area contaminated with blood or OPIM should immediately be washed with soap and water.30 Exposed mucous membranes should be flushed with water. While the use of an antiseptic agent is not contraindicated, using antiseptic agents for wound care or squeezing the wound to express fluid has not been shown to reduce the risk of infection. The application of caustic agents or the injection of antiseptics into the wound is not recommended.
